Experiments with Freemotion Embroidery – 3 day workshop
Enjoy the freedom of drawing with your sewing machine to create your very own textile art in this
workshop focusing on the art of freemotion embroidery.
This in-depth 3 day workshop covers everything you need to know to make the most out of this wonderfully creative technique.
Aimed primarily at beginners but also suitable for those who have some knowledge of the technique and
wish really to hone their skills with a plethora of top tips and handy advice.
During day one we will be looking at the basics of setting up your machine and what equipment and
materials work best, before experimenting with both freemotion and applique through a variety of
small samples. You will go from simple line work, to practicing and perfecting designs by working
through a selection of applique pictures. Each step helps to develop and improve your confidence as
you become more skilled at the technique. You will finish the day with not only a wealth of knowledge
but also a beautiful piece of freemotion artwork using the raw edge applique technique.
Day two focuses on the more versatile side of freemotion, working with dissolvable fabric and wools,
we will also be looking at ‘motif making’ to add 3Dimensional depth into your work.
During day three we will be examining how to combine some of the different elements of freemotion
embroidery together in one composition. Using a selection of the techniques you have tried out in the
previous days you will produce a lovely ‘coastal themed’ finished embroidery hoop picture by the end
of the 3 day event.
This workshop is taught by Caroline Michelle Morgan who is a Welsh textile artist currently living and
working in her adopted home of Cornwall.
All materials are supplied however you are welcome to bring a small selection of fabrics as well as the

This workshop was a brilliant experience! Three days is enough time to be completely immersed in a lovely creative bubble, with the bonus of Sian’s truly fabulous food, all delivered in the beautiful setting at Ash Farm. Caroline is a gifted tutor, who has the skill of combining detailed and clear instruction with time to practice each new skill along the way. She had so many handy tips and we all benefitted from her vast creative knowledge and experience. The materials provided were top notch and to come away each day with a finished item to be proud of left me with a wonderful sense of achievement! Thank you Caroline and Sian!

An exciting break from routine. It was a a delight to visit Ash Farm. So comfortable and tranquil. Delicious food and snacks kept the energy levels up. Caroline is a splendid teacher. She is hugely talented and is interested in assisting you to understand the processes involved.. She is very gentle and encouraging with endless patience. She respected everyone’s individuality and there were many pleased people clutching their “artworks” by the end of the course. Time absolutely whizzed by as we selected beautiful fabrics and threads to fashion our interpretations of the various projects. An absolutely wonderful course. The highlight of the year. Thank you Sian and Caroline

I learnt more in the first two hours than any other free motion course I’ve ever done! Caroline was an excellent tutor, giving confidence and encouragement in equal measure. Due to the small numbers, everyone had plenty of one-to-one time with Caroline. It was lovely to be able to take away practice pieces along with small, finished pieces each day. Our final pieces were works of art, all displaying our individual tastes and talents. The facilities at Ash Farm were excellent and Sian’s food was amazing (Sian should definitely write a cookbook!). Thank you for three fabulous days!
