Beyond the Basics: Freemotion Embroidery & Fabric Creation – 3-Day Workshop

With Caroline Morgan, Textile Artist

July 24th, 25th and 26th 2026 / Friday – Sunday

10:00 AM – 4:30 PM daily
£348 plus materials (£25 paid directly to tutor)
Lunch and dessert included
Tea station available throughout the day

This immersive 3-day workshop offers a fantastic opportunity to refine your freemotion embroidery skills, leading to stunning outcomes like a beautiful three-dimensional picture. Perfect for those who already have a basic understanding of freemotion embroidery, this workshop will elevate your techniques with expert tips, hands-on practice, and plenty of guidance.

The focus will be on creating unique fabrics using a wide variety of materials, including the incredibly versatile dissolvable fabric. You’ll also learn how to bring together different elements into a cohesive composition.

Day 1: Crafting Unique Fabrics

We’ll begin by exploring how to create one-of-a-kind fabrics using a variety of scraps. You’ll discover which fabrics work best and how to manipulate them into exciting textures. We’ll also dive into dissolvable fabric, and by the end of the day, you’ll have created a beautiful layered fabric lantern.

Day 2: Thread Sketching & Painterly Freemotion

Day 2 focuses on the more painterly side of freemotion embroidery, known as thread sketching. You’ll use your machine to “draw” on fabric, experimenting with different fabrics, wools, and dissolvable fabric. Through guided warm-up exercises, you’ll build the confidence to create a lovely mini bird picture using a variety of colored threads.

Day 3: Bringing It All Together

On the final day, we’ll combine all the elements you’ve worked on in the previous days. With the addition of raw edge applique motifs, you’ll see how your unique fabrics can come together in a stunning, coastal-themed textile art composition.

About the Workshop

Led by Caroline Michelle Morgan, a talented Welsh textile artist based in Cornwall, this workshop offers a chance to learn from an expert with years of experience. All materials will be provided; however, you’re welcome to bring a small selection of your own fabrics to personalize your creations.

What to Bring:

  • Sewing Machine (including foot pedal and cable)
  • Freemotion Embroidery Foot
  • Extra Wide Table for your machine (helpful but not essential)
  • Black Thread

  1. The Maker

    Ceri Morgan May 2026
I tied my stay with a 3 day craft workshop which was being held at Ash Farm.
It’s a beautiful setting with fab views of the countryside.
I stayed in the Grove room – (well it’s far more than a room) was beautiful, really welcoming and cosy, with soft bedding, and a well set out space, and fully equipped with lots of extras too
The course – wow! So much was covered and amazing work created, delicious food prepared by Sian for our lunches
The lunches need discussing- simply stunning, nutritious food, the seed cracker – I’ve never tasted such a delicious cracker! The falafel- the best I’ve ever had with a vibrant salad.
    Everything was delicious
The alpacas – how wonderful to see them so close up
Hoping to come back with friends for lunch soon, and I’m already booked in for my next stay. Ceri Morgan
